A Life Begins…Again!

Today, that memory was especially poignant for my husband and I as we watched that very girl graduate from our Destiny Rescue restoration program. She stood tall and proud as she spoke of her journey and took the time to encourage our newer arrivals. She was ready to begin her life as an independent young woman.
We like to celebrate the future and not dwell on their past, but today I remembered with great clarity, the painful past of this cherished soul. And it somehow made her victory more sacred and more sweet.
Since beginning this precious work with Destiny Rescue we have seen many girls reintegrate back into society and into life; we have watched breathless as they have entered meaningful jobs and made a success of the opportunities given to them by Destiny Rescue. We have felt like proud parents as we have seen these girls take their first tentative steps into true independence, into a new life.
Today was one of those days that makes you glad to be alive; a day when everything you have hoped and dreamed materialises. Today was the day. Eight of our beautiful girls left ‘home’ to start careers in beauty, hairdressing and hospitality. After months of hard work, steely determination and tenacious courage, these precious young ladies had made it.
The young ladies giving their graduation speech were not just any girls; these were children we had tenderly watched over for months. These were lives we had loved back to wholeness. These were hands we held when suicide attempts had been made. We had cried many tears with these precious ones and felt their pain deep inside our own chests as we offered up their sufferings to a mighty God who alone can bring the deep healing they needed.
All of the beautiful girls who stood before us had come from high trauma situations. They had been trafficked, raped and seriously abused. But today, these little ones stood strong and powerful with a future of hope glistening before them. Today they smiled and told stories of encouragement to newly rescued girls. Today they took my breath away.
